In the entire history of Surfstation, September 11th 2001 is the day we got the most traffic. CNN, BBC, Reuters, all the “news”-sites were down or running at a snail pace, so Surfstation became the place where we tried to post news about what was happening around the world. Along with k10k, DiK, and other portals we tried to relay information to those that could not get it elsewhere.
So many rumors and so much fear, but also so much community and outpouring of support. We always think of the buildings going down or the planes crashing, but we also have to remember that the blood-banks around the world filled up that day, that millions of people came together around this tragedy to say that we are all together in this, that we will stand by our friends from the other side of the world. For one day we forgot all our bullshit and tried to help each-other.
Strange to think how different the world was back then. How much our technology has advanced. How little our humanity has progressed. Hopefully we’ll be headed in a new direction soon.
