Adios LA

17 December, 2010 Pete

post_5875-450x388.jpg

Adios LA is a visual goodbye to the city Jon Jackson has called home for years as the artist heads east making New York his new home. Not wanting to string LA along, he has decided to firmly break it off through a graphic billboard series posted on the famous streets of his first love.

If you are in Los Angeles from the 17th of December to the 15th of January, you can use this site to give you the locations of the outdoor boards so you can drive by and see the break up in process. Bring a camera and box of tissue.

Love this idea. We need more billboards with real messages on them instead of all the advertising pollution.

audible mesh

Audible mesh is an interactive art piece programmed in Flash, which utilizes camera and audio data to create generative artwork. The software translates the camera data into a grid (a mesh) of datapoints which are positioned, overlapped, and drawn using sound input. The result is projected on a undulating surface, which is painted with matte gesso to distort the clean lines of a digital projection, to create a more painterly output.

Just like it ever was — late and very likely over-budget, but none the less fantastically beautiful: Peter Saville’s last design for Factory impressario Tony Wilson.

A Billboard That Advertises Nothing But Clean Air

2 November, 2010 Pete

post_5692-450x244.jpg

A provocative new sculpture has opened at the U.S.-Canada border crossing near Vancouver, BC. It’s a billboard advertising…well, nothing.
So instead of your usual glimpse of cheeseburgers and red-faced car salesmen, you’ve got a snarl of stainless steel rods vaguely reminiscent of TV static, but surrounding only the clean air of Blaine, Washington.

Billboards are pollution. The sooner we acknowledge this fact, the faster we can start removing them from our cities. First step is admitting you have a problem.

post_5630-450x283.jpg

chinese conceptual artist ai weiwei
has filled the museum’s turbine hall with millions of life-sized sunflower seed husks made out of
porcelain. the collective effort of a number of specialists from jingdezhen, china, the hand-crafted
seeds were individually formed and painted. the installation encourages visitors to touch and walk
on the carpet of tiny replicates.

That looks like a surreal experience.
