TASCHEN Books: Latin American Graphic Design

30 August, 2008 Pete

Comprised of 20 countries located in North, South, and Central America as well as the Caribbean Islands, Latin America is populated by over 500 million people. From Argentina to Mexico, all Latin American countries are Spanish-speaking with the exception of Portuguese-speaking Brazil. Latin America has been producing a very unique form of graphic expression for decades and this historical publication brings together the best examples from the 20th century as well as today. The book begins with an extensive historical essay about the region’s contribution to design, featuring the development of graphic design in the region from 1900 to current times, while the main body of the book features A to Z entries of almost 200 designers and design offices that have built up and continue to champion the Latin design identity. Finally, a handy index facilitates access to key information in the book, such as designers’ names, countries, publications, educational institutions, and famous events.

Laszlo Kovacs

23 August, 2008 Pete

“Lives and works in the North of Spain, South of Europe. His colourful and optimistic illustrations have been published on main leading magazines in Spain, like “el PaĆs” “El Mundo” or “Club Cultura” among others. Laszlito draws like a monkey all day long. He found his inspiration in Michel Gondry movies, candyfloss, music, deers, whales and penguins his friends and family. And all the things who made this world sweet and better.”

Really love the retro feel he evokes in his illustrations.

Vintage Porsche Ads

22 August, 2008 Pete

I just dumped a bunch of vintage Porsche ads at FFFound … I know, I know. Materialistic, bad for the environment, car-culture = bad … but there’s just something beautiful about that little roadster’s shape, and these ads are lovely graphic design history, really.

The Tale of How

“Shy the Sun” is a name you should remember. These guys did that new and amazing United Airlines spot called “Sea Orchestra”. Thought everyone might like to see something else they’ve done. The Tale of how is insanely sick.. Not enough words to describe the work they are doing.

Richard Wurman , the creator of TED ( and personal hero ), is embarking with a number of partners in studying and understanding the worlds largest cities from a statistical standpoint. The purpose seem to be to better understand how we as a species function in large societies and provide the findings to the global community to better solve the problems caused by increased population density.

An interesting fact when reading about Wurman is that he actually coined the term “information architect”.
